Blue Marlin Highlights The Week......
December 03 2004

I'm writing this on Thursday since I will be out of town for a few days with my ol' pal from Costa Rica Darrell Fowler. I also skipped last week because Frances scared everyone away. I fished the last three days, but today was definitely the highlight. A great charter and good friends Alan & Nicki braved the weather all the way from England. We headed offshore today in search of anything. We headed toward the humps in search of mahi mahi, but didn't run across any on the way. So we put out a couple of tuna lures to see if Mr. Blackfin was around. It didn't take long and whamo, we had our first knockdown of the day. It was a nice tuna, weighing in around twenty pounds. We kept this up pretty much the whole day, with several nice blackfins, and lots of big skipjacks to fill in as well. About four hours into the day the water just exploded with big 30 plus pound blackfins just destroying a massive baitball. Alan whipped out the flyrod and with his second cast he was off to the races. The blackfin were still everywhere, so I whipped a small ballyhoo into the feeding frenzy and the doubleheader was on. Unfortunately Alans leader gave out after about ten minutes, but we got the other big blackfin to the boat about fifteen minutes after that. At the end of the day, I literally told Alan we were on our last troll by the hump when the right rigger popped off. Line sizzled off the reel as I wound in the other line(yes, we were only running two lines because there were just too many fish and not enough anglers), and I started backing down to get some line back. Alan fought the fish well, and after about twenty minutes he saw some color. I took a peek over and low and behold if it wasn't a nice rat blue marlin! About five minutes later I grabbed it by the bill, we brought it in the boat, Nicki shot some quick pics, and after reviving it for a few mintues, it swam away nice and healthy. I estimated it around a nice 120lbs. Fun day, and a decent week all around. Well, Until Next Week.......Capt. Jeff
