Key Largo Backcountry Report
February 11 2005 |
| Greetings once again from Key Largo. Sometimes we complain when it gets a little windy and cold here, but all we have to do is turn on the Weather Channel and look at what’s happening in the rest of the country. When it gets down to 55 degrees and it’s blowing 20 out of the North, we put on everything we own and kick anything that gets in our way, mumbling the whole time about moving South. If it’s 55 here, it’s got to be at least 20-50 degrees colder up North. That’s why people come here in the winter. They come to enjoy our sunshine and our fish rich waters, and the fishing has been just that lately. RICH!!!
Capt. Mike Bright has been showing off some of our good fishing lately. On one of his trips West last week, Mike’s anglers fished live Shrimp on the bottom and reeled in some large Sheepshead, numerous Black Drum, five Redfish, and a 14 pound Snook. When our water temperature drops, the fish like to hang out in the deeper creeks and channels that dot the southern most tip of our mainland. When the tide is moving, pieces of frozen Shrimp tossed out for chum can bring the fish right to the back of your boat. Be prepared to catch some of those funny looking fish with whiskers on them. Catfish are a pest, but it’s the price you have to pay for catching some really nice bottom fish.
I had a couple from Utah that were here to escape some of that white stuff on the ground. Mark and Elle Garn from Riverton, Utah enjoyed an afternoon and some sunshine while out on my Ranger. We even managed to find a few fish. On Elle’s very first cast in salt water, she caught a 24” Snook. We also reeled in a few Mangrove Snapper and Trout to go along with it. All of our fish were caught on Hook Up Jigs and live Shrimp.
We have had some exceptional weather considering what has been going on everywhere else, so next time it hits 55 degrees and blows 20 out of the North, just remember that we wouldn’t have a “Tourist Season” if we weren’t the warmest spot in the nation.
Until next time, good tides and keep the Sun to your back. ><)))>
