Rodriquez key and the reef
February 18 2005

Well there have been some exceptionally warm calm days this week. Practically no waves, the ocean is like a huge calm lake. Calm days really make you appreciate the clarity of the water oceanside. You can see literally 20 feet down with perfect clarity, and you can see much further then that just not quite so perfectly.

We initially headed out to fish around French\'s reef but there were boats lined up out there. People are mostly friendly and everyone has the right to do whatever in the ocean, but I just can\'t see anchoring up in the middle of a crowd. So I head back in shore and fished the reef closer to home.

We ending up catching some Spanish mackerel and a barracuda, and some undersized grouper and mutton snapper. All in perfect weather but not a huge amount of fish. Right before we went in we switched to a patch reef off of Rodriquez key. Immediately upon arrival a school of about 100 or so bluefish showed up. So I started pitching top water poppers at them. Talk about action packed the water was just boiling with blue fish. Smashing everything that hits the water. The first one was hooked in a second but right before he hit the boat his gill plate cut the line. The next one made it to the boat. The next one made it halfway to the boat when a five foot long blacktip shark came from out of nowhere and snatched him. I was using 12# line, but I think I might have been able to get the shark, if it wasn\'t for a lovely lobster trap he decided to cut across.

Oh well, the next day was pretty similar but no bluefish and the mutton and grouper were keeper size.

I\'m not a guide, but I definitely tell you if you are up north you need to come down here and check it out. The sun is shining, it\'s 78 degrees and the fish are biting.

If you are coming check out the guides on this site or give me call at 305-433-7535 and I will hook you up
