Mixed Bag
October 30 2004
Hello Fish Fans, The transition from summer fishin to winter fishin continues, there’s a little bit of everything scattered about offshore but nothin is red hot. We’re catchin a mixed bag of fish, the Blackfin Tuna on the Islamorada Humps are runnin smaller on most days than they were a month ago and there’s a few being caught in less than 200 feet of water while Sailfishin. The Dolphin fishin is slowing down but we’re catchin a few in 150 to 300 feet of water on a regular basis, if conditions allow it and you head furthur offshore and find that magical piece of debris, you’ll probably find it loaded with Dolphin, 5 to 25 pounders. The water temperture on the reefs edge is now about 78 degrees, as it drops the Sailfishin will get better and better. Right now you can expect 2 to 3 hook-ups on an average day and over the next 30 days this will improve to 3 to 5. The Sailfishin should be red hot by the middle of November this year providing the cool fronts keep passin through and if you plan on goin Sailfishin off Islamorada between November and February you need to book your trips as soon as possible, the Reel Busy is 50% booked for these months already and I would expect most of the other top boats are booking up as well. When the conditions allow it we’re catchin Flag Yellowtail, Mutton Snapper and Black Grouper on the deeper reefs, if you catch calm seas and mild currents you can expect excellent bottom fishin throughout the winter months. The Sailfish is the most acrobatic fish in the ocean and there’s nothin more exciting than havin a Sailfish or 2 or 3 dancin on the top of the water attached to your rod and reel. Last week I had an angler who decided he’d like to catch Tuna and Dolphin instead of Sailfish so we did, on the way back to the dock I saw a pair of war birds in 60 feet of water and had to check it out, as we approached I got reel excited cause I saw a ball of bait with a pair of Sailfish chasin them around, I grabbed a light tackle rod that was set up for schooley Dolphin, put on a live ballyhoo and thru it into the bait ball, as soon as it hit the water a Sailfish ate it up and took to the air, we didn’t have it on very long but long enough for my angler to wish we had been Sailfishin that day, he couldn’t believe how exciting it was when he hooked up. Give us a call and catch a Sailfish, you’ll be reely glad you did 305-304-9049. I’ll be back in about 10 days with another fishin report from Islamorada, Sportfishin Capital of the World, Catch You Later, Captain Wayne, Reel Busy Charters
